Permaculture - What is it, and what can it do for you?

As temporary custodians of this Earth, we're just starting to understand what Bill Mollison and David Holmgren were onto back in the 1970's on the issue of permaculture.

If you're eager to dip your toe into the water of this fascinating and common-sense approach, then the following videos (courtesy of YouTube) may be somewhere to start. This link to the Permaculture Research Institute should also be helpful.

This introduction to permaculture introduces concepts including:

  • The disaster of agriculture,
  • The importance of biodiversity,
  • Design in planting, and
  • The connection between plants and animals.

This concept makes so much sense, it's a wonder that it's not taught in every school.

Cheers Matt, I subscribed to Graeme and Meg's website some time ago now and often refer to it for inspiration. Have you put their ideas into action?

Just starting to, I have a new small orchard and I plan to dig some swales between the trees and divert rainwater run off into them rather then have it run down the driveway.. We have also replanted a lot of flowering natives on the block to try to create a native ecosystem to attracted natural pest contol organisms. We have chooks, wicking vegie beds and an aquaponics system (you can check it out at the link: http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6167&start=0
It is a long slow process but one day I would like to have a food forest on the block, maybe it will be ready for my retirement.

  • I've just had a look at your aquaponics thread – it looks awesome! Great to see what someone has already done in our part of the world, as we will have the same water supply challenges that you deal with. Would like to see more of your successes, and will offer an extra pair of hands if it would help you with any projects you're working on.
